Graduate Student in the Department of Horticultural Science, Fawibe Kehinde, Wins Best Presentation Award at International Conference!

2024.03.20

IMG_6120.jpgGraduate student Fawibe Kehinde (referred to as Kenny) enrolled in the Environmental Science for Bioproduction Program, Division of Environment and Horticulture, Course of the Department of Horticultural Science, has won the Best Oral and Poster Presentation Award at "the 2023 ASA, CSSA, SSSA International Annual Meeting" by presenting outstanding research results.

This international conference, organized by the renowned American Society of Agronomy (ASA), Crop Science Society of America (CSSA), and Soil Science Society of America (SSSA), gathers researchers and experts from around the world in the fields of agronomy, crop science, and soil science every year.

Kenny presented research on "the effect of elevated CO2 and nitrogen application on rice straw decomposition", for which her excellent presentation skills were recognized along with the outcomes, earning her one of the Best Presentation Award.

She shared more detail information about her research.

"I'm investigating how changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration affect the relationship between plants and soil. Specifically, we are focusing on how the decomposition of rice straw is affected by increased carbon dioxide concentration. I used two varieties of rice straw produced in common Japanese paddy fields and examined the effects of elevated carbon dioxide concentration and nitrogen fertilization on the decomposition of rice straw."

IMG_8988.jpgIn response to receiving the award, Kenny commented, "I can't but appreciate my wonderful supervisor (Associate Prof. Miwa Yashima) for her time, support, corrections and her teaching. I am super grateful to have you as my supervisor thank you so much and also to the contributors from NARO, thank you so much for providing samples and feedback on my work I do not take it for granted."

Additionally, Kenny shared that she engaged in fruitful group discussions with participants from various nationalities during the conference.
Such international exchanges, offering diverse cultural and perspective-based debates, provided new insights for Kenny's research and served as opportunities for growth.
Also, she was happy to be selected for "2023 Graduate leadership conference" from 28th - 29th and also attend "Women in Science Talk" and peer review training workshop.

Congratulations!
