Prof. Akira Kanno has a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Agriculture, Nagoya University.
His research interests range from basic research, such as analyzing the molecular mechanism of sex determination in asparagus, to applied research, such as developing sex-determining markers and breeding all-male varieties.
Asparagus has many related species, and some of the related species have disease resistance, salt tolerance, or medicinal components.
He's also working on breeding new asparagus cultivars by crossbreeding asparagus with related species with useful agronomic traits.
