Dr. Shimpei Uraguchi received his Ph.D. in Agricultural Science from the United Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, after completing his undergraduate and master's degrees at the same institution.
He began his research career at Dr. Satoru Ishikawa's group in the National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences (currently part of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization, NARO), and subsequently joined Prof. Dr. Toru Fujiwara's lab as a postdoctoral researcher at The University of Tokyo.
In 2010, he was awarded a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (PD), followed by a JSPS Overseas Research Fellowship.
From 2012, he conducted research at Prof. Dr. Stephan Clemens's lab at the University of Bayreuth in Germany.
In 2015, he was appointed as a full-time Lecturer at the School of Pharmacy, Kitasato University. Since 2025, he has been serving as an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Horticulture, Chiba University.
Dr. Uraguchi specializes in plant nutrition. His research focuses on the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying plant tolerance and transport of toxic elements such as cadmium and arsenic, as well as the regulation of these processes through plant biotechnology.
He also studied plant responses and transport mechanisms related to essential micronutrients, including boron and zinc.
His work has been encompassing a broad range of plant species, from model plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana, rice, and tomato, to green manure crops and wild heavy metal hyperaccumulator Arabidopsis helleri.
He is a member of several academic societies, including the Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition (Editorial Board Member of the journal), the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists, and the Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology and Agrochemistry.
He also serves as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Plant Science.
